The Case Report is a gameplay feature of L.A. Noire. After successfully closing a case as a Detective, the

player's efficiency will be rated on a 1-5-star scale.

The rating will be determined by the following factors:

  • Number of clues found
  • Number of questions correctly branched
  • Damage to vehicles
  • Damage to city property
  • Inflicted injuries

To avoid all damages done to the public, you can let your partner drive you to your case locations, however in some cases this may cause the player to miss something such as in "The White Shoe Slaying", where if the player does this, they will miss the call about the location of the taxi which means they won't be able to get a 5 star rating. Inflicted injuries to members of the public are reportedly the worst influence on the player's rating.

The player will only receive a rating for your work as a Detective (Traffic, Homicide, Vice and Arson desks). The Patrol cases are intended as tutorials on clue finding, shootouts, chasing suspects, and interrogation.

The ratings are on a 1-5 scale:

  • Unbecoming (1 star)
  • Routine (2 star)
  • Meritorious (3 star)
  • Distinguished (4 star)
  • Valorous (5 star)

Closing your first case with Valorous rating (5-star), will earn the player the Achievement/Trophy The Up and Up. Completing all story cases with a Valorous rating will earn the player Shamus to the Stars.
