Detective is a rank in the Los Angeles Police Department.

The Detective is senior in rank to Police Officer, but inferior to Captain, Lieutenant and Sergeant.
Detectives are investigators who are assigned cases usually from the Captain in charge of their department. They have a wide variety of techniques available in conducting investigations. However, the majority of cases are solved by finding evidence and interrogating suspects or witnesses for information related to the crime.
Some detectives are also given the unofficial rank of Chief Detective, which means they're the senior detective in their department. Only Roy Earle of Vice had this rank until his termination since his reputation as a corrupt cop was no longer a secret.
