"This guy tried to help me and got a bullet for his trouble."
Barton Keyes

"Would Be Robber" is a Homicide street crime case in L.A. Noire.

Situation[]

Someone calls the police after witnessing two men stick up a fruit stand owned by Barton Keyes. A man tried to intervene and was shot in the stomach, prompting the thieves to make a run for it. Alerted by KGPL, LAPD Detectives Cole Phelps and Rusty Galloway arrive on the scene to find Keyes trying to comfort the wounded man. Keyes informs them that the crooks took off in another direction, just as they speed right past the stand in a getaway car.

Dispatch Call Script[]

Dispatch: KGPL to any Central unit, a citizen reports a man with a gun. On Grand between Fourth and Fifth. Any central unit, identify.

Cole Phelps: This is car 11K, go ahead.

Dispatch: 11K, citizen reports a man with a gun on Grand between Fourth and Fifth Streets. Suspect described as Hispanic, five foot six, a hundred and forty pounds. Approach with caution. Code Two.

Walkthrough[]

After spotting the fleeing crooks, Phelps is quick to initiate pursuit. Galloway will try to shoot out the car's tires, but it doesn't seem to slow them due to his poor accuracy. The thieves will take the first turn right then a left into an alleyway where a patrol car appears in a failed attempt to cut them off. They then drive past Scott's Garage, where another car sideswipes them off the road.

The crooks crash their car near a service station and split up. One scampers up a ladder and onto the roof while the other takes the station attendant hostage with his short-barreled revolver. Phelps must quickly shoot the man with the hostage (if the hostage is killed the mission fails), then climb the ladder to the roof. Once on the roof, Phelps will see the second man, who has taken cover behind a vent and is armed with a semi-automatic pistol. A brief shootout ends with the thief being gunned down in self-defense.

Bugs[]

  • Sometimes the second crook may not engage you on sight. That means you can just walk up to him and aim your gun while he just ducks there, refusing to react. Shooting him will solve the bug as he will engage.
  • If you're using any kind of hack or mod that uncaps the 30fps limit, it is advised to turn it off during this side mission. The increased frame rate causes the suspect's car to move slightly faster, killing him and the hostage when they crash into the garage and triggering an automatic failure.
